London, March 28, 2024 – Inspired by our legacy of confronting dictatorships and fighting for human rights, digital freedom, and the sci-fi tales of ‘Space Mail’ from the ’80s, Space Email™ was originally launched in 2021 as a secure, private alternative to mainstream email providers. However, because it initially relied on Big Tech infrastructure, our passionate user base cheered us on to go further: deliver true independence from Big Tech. Today, we are over the Moon to announce that we have delivered.
To help people break free from Big Tech, Space Email proudly announces its transformation into a fully independent, people centric, open-source platform. In collaboration with Apheleia IT AG, a Swiss pioneer in privacy-focused technology, Space Email 2.0 is setting a new standard for secure and private email and work applications.
A Year in the Making: A Commitment to Digital Freedom
This milestone has been a long time coming. Exactly one year ago, on 28 March 2023, we started talks with Apheleia IT AG to launch the next-generation Space Email. Apheleia has been an open source & digital privacy titan since 2013, and their admirable contributions to the cause of open source and privacy inspired us to choose them as partners to turn our vision into reality.
“I’m thrilled to announce that Rocket Domains’s Space Email is no more based on the Big Tech infrastructure, transforming into a fully open-source, Swiss-hosted platform in partnership with the privacy titans Apheleia IT AG. This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a revolution,” said Barrister Fraz Wahlah, CEO of Rocket Domains.
“Why this matters:
✔ No more surveillance capitalism – Your inbox shouldn’t be a product.
✔ Swiss privacy laws – Data stored under the world’s strongest protections.
✔ Open-source transparency – No backdoors, no hidden agendas.
✔ All-in-one productivity – Private email, calendar, drive, video calls, docs, website & design tools, and more.
We didn’t just build an alternative. We built an exit strategy,” Wahlah added. “This milestone belongs to our users, who demanded freedom from bigtech. To privacy advocates, civil rights activists, and our partners at Apheleia and their wonderful people, who share our uncompromising vision to further the high ideals of privacy and digital freedom. And to everyone who believes technology should serve people—not shareholders and malicious entities.”
“By making Space Email independent of big tech, we are not only protecting privacy but also building a community of users who value freedom above all. This is a mile stone for the people of this planet, for their privacy, and for a future where people—not corporations—control their digital lives. Join us in the fight to reclaim your digital freedom.”
A Bold Move to Open Source
Unlike proprietary platforms that lock users into ecosystems riddled with tracking, profiling, and ads, Space Email 2.0 is now fully autonomous—a platform made by the people, for the people.
Features That Take You Beyond the Ordinary
Swiss Privacy
Whilst Space Email is already super secure and private, to further bolster privacy, all user data will now be stored exclusively in Switzerland, a country with some of the world’s most stringent data protection laws.
